A Line in the Sand
A Line in the Sand Presented by Jane Deering Gallery at Jane Deering Gallery Apr 02 - Apr 30, 2021 Along the water’s edge at the incoming tide a line is drawn. On the other side, among the sand’s crystals, treasures are revealed - a luminescent piece of sea glass or a piece of a lobsterman’s line peeking out. As working artists on Cape Ann, Leslie Heffron and Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco have drawn their own lines in the sand. - purposefully seeking these treasures, observing both the beauty and banality of the world, interpreting what they see and feel in new and meaningful ways, and creating works of art that tell the story. In this exhibition, you will experience Leslie’s seaside interpretations on canvas and Jacqueline’s in the form of Wearable Art. Join these artists at the Jane Deering Gallery for the month of April to share this experience and take home your piece of Cape Ann’s natural beauty.… |

Assigned Female at Birth, a web series about some bodies
Assigned Female at Birth, a web series about some bodies Presented by Another Country Productions at Another Country Productions Jan 11 - Jun 30, 2021 Early in the pandemic award-winning writer Lyralen Kaye began participating in on-line festivals presented on Zoom, YouTube and Facebook Live, as theater and film artists did all over the world. An award-winning writer and long-time producer, Kaye wasn't satisfied with Zoom plays and readings; they became convinced that having actors film themselves remotely could work. Then, Clare Solly suggested Kaye write a play about body image. Kaye, who identifies as a non-binary gender fluid pansexual living with a PTSD disability, began reaching out to queer communities and communities of color for interview subjects, and so AFAB took on a life of its own. “Body is race, gender, identity, age, ability and size,” Kaye says. “You can’t write about body image in today’s world and not enter the complications of intersectionality.” The 23 characters depicted in AFAB, like the 32 people interviewed by Kaye, have been taught from birth that their… |

EMILY LOMBARDO: THE CAPRICHOS
EMILY LOMBARDO: THE CAPRICHOS Presented by Montserrat College of Art at 248 Gallery Jan 25 - May 15, 2021 2013-2016 ETCHING AND AQUATINT, 9 X 6 INCHES The Caprichos, by Emily Lombardo, is a series of 80 etchings which are in direct conversation and homage to Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos, 1799. Both reveal the dark underbelly of cultural movements which ultimately serve to divide society across economic, racial, political, religious, and gender lines. Goya’s series explores the artist’s dissatisfaction and disgust with humanity’s follies during the Enlightenment, a period in which much of the Western world embraced reason and scientific discovery, yet the artist’s native Spain experienced devastating wars, economic humiliation, and religious fanaticism. Though inspired by his own society, Goya’s prints expose humanity’s universal failings. They reveal the dangerous tendency of all cultural movements to give way to fascism and inequity. Lombardo continues this investigation within the modern, globalized world, bringing these same issues into contemporary light through a queer feminist lens. Using Goya’s work as a point… |

Lecture: 1774: The Long Year of Revolution with Mary Beth Norton, Ph.D.
Lecture: 1774: The Long Year of Revolution with Mary Beth Norton, Ph.D. Presented by Marblehead Museum at Online/Virtual Space Apr 15, 2021 Join us for a virtual talk with Mary Beth Norton on her 2020 book 1774: The Long Year of Revolution which looks at how traditional loyalists to King George III began their discordant “discussions” that led to their acceptance of the inevitability of war against the British Empire and to the clashes at Lexington and Concord in mid-April 1775. Drawing extensively on pamphlets, newspapers, and personal correspondence, Norton reconstructs colonial political discourse as it happened, showing the vigorous campaign mounted by conservatives criticizing congressional actions. Mary Beth Norton is the author of five books and co-editor of several others. Her textbook, A People and a Nation, a survey of U.S. history written with five other authors, has been published in ten editions and has sold more than 500,000 copies. Machinal by Sophie Treadwell
Machinal by Sophie Treadwell Presented by Salem State University Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Online/Virtual Space Mar 11 - Mar 18, 2021 Machinal tells the story of a “young woman – any woman” who works as a stenographer in the industrial, male-dominated world of the 1920s. The play depicts her struggle for personal fulfillment in a world where isolation, commodification and automation overwhelm daily life. An illicit love affair opens the door to joy and a new future, but when reality sets in and she must return to her routine existence, she will go to any lengths to keep her freedom. Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist masterwork premiered in 1928. It takes its inspiration from the real-life case of Ruth Snyder who, along with her lover, was convicted and executed for the murder of her husband. Although Treadwell was also a journalist, Machinal is in no way a literal retelling of the Snyder case. Instead, Treadwell absorbed details of the case to study the forces that would influence a woman to commit such an… |

MIKE GRIMALDI AND BRETT MASON : AS ABOVE, SO BELOW
MIKE GRIMALDI AND BRETT MASON : AS ABOVE, SO BELOW Presented by Montserrat College of Art at Founders Gallery Jan 25 - May 15, 2021 As Above, So Below is a visual conversation between Mike Grimaldi ’05 and Brett Mason ’12. Despite the two artists graduating from Montserrat College of Art and both having years of experience in the fine arts field, each artist’s style is entirely unique unto themselves. Grimaldi and Mason come from two different galaxies in regards to their visual aesthetic and artistic approach. This exhibition is a microcosm to the macrocosm of individuals finding common ground and understanding. The artists needed to negotiate, collaborate, and ultimately compromise on the work as a whole. What is presented on the wall is a synthesis of two minds creating a work of art that could not have existed without collective organization. As further exploration of the concept, the artists will return separately to iterate the piece over the course of the semester. This act of call and response is emblematic of the conversations necessary… |

VERSE/VISUAL 2021
VERSE/VISUAL 2021 Presented by Cynthia August Images at Ipswich Riverwalk Mar 05 - Apr 30, 2021 Creators Cynthia August and Sarah Vickery proudly present the third year of VERSE/VISUAL. It is a verbal and visual exchange between writers and image-makers. Based on a project done by The New York Times in 2017, we pair a writer and an image maker, supply them with an inspiration piece created by one of the two participants, and ask them to create a new piece inspired by it. Usually, we have a gallery show at Gathr, Ipswich's co-working and event space, but CV19 demanded innovation, so we created a hybrid show that has both an online gallery and a community art walk. The art walk is comprised of QR code signs, as the weather improves, the outdoor show will grow to include small weatherproof blocks featuring writing excerpts and image details, rain poetry and a community poet-tree. As you wander around Ipswich, you might come upon one of our QR… |

WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? (Art Exhibition)
WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? (Art Exhibition) Presented by Salem State University Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Online/Virtual Space Feb 16 - Mar 19, 2021 Art is a language unto itself and the creative process remains as mysterious as the language of love. When you put the two together, you’re in some very strange and interesting territory. The six artists in this exhibition share not only a deep involvement in the creative process but also share a personal relationship. How have their relationships affected their production as artists and vice versa? How have each couples’ individual artistic trajectory been altered in their intimate propinquity? This exhibition features work by David McCoy and Mary Bucci McCoy; Robert Siegelman and Mark Younkle; Linda Leslie Brown and James Montford.
