Amanda Abreu

ARTIST’S STATEMENT// In my paintings, and my work, I help women empower themselves with unapologetic authenticity, to reclaim their right to themselves and their own self-preservation. My offerings are designed to reconnect women to their truest selves, to enable them to fulfill their deepest wants and needs. I want women to feel supported, validated, and seen. I hold space for women to access self-love, to experience transformation, and to do things they never believed, but secretly wished, they could do. AMANDA ABREU BIO// Amanda Abreu enjoys working with women on the transformational aspects of creativity. She holds in-person workshops, both group and one-on one, on topics ranging from identity and self-awareness, to how to bring creativity into your daily life. Amanda holds a Master of Education from Northeastern University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies and Sociology from Simmons University. She is a certified Intentional Creativity® Teacher, Intentional Creativity Guild Member, and a graduate of the Color of Woman School. When she is not painting or teaching, you will find her homeschooling her kids, practicing radical self-care, cooking, baking, watching Grey’s Anatomy, or spending time with friends.

Kurt Ankeny

Kurt Ankeny is an award-winning cartoonist and painter whose work has appeared in Best American Comics, at the Society of Illustrators, at the Cape Ann Museum, and in Comics Workbook, PEN America’s Illustrated PEN, and Fantagraphics’s NOW Anthology. He released In Pieces: Someplace Which I Call Home in 2016, and his collection of short story comics from AdHouse Books in October of 2019.

Paula Borsetti

“Well I Haven’t Much to Say” yet I do… This body of work is part of an ongoing series of paintings, drawings, prints and mixed media pieces inspired by my fathers hand. I am looking at his writings, patent drawings and sketches. I merge these with my love of living by the water. I am interested in the topography of the land as well as the rocks of the east coast of New England and Sebago Lake area in Maine. The title of this series, “Well I Haven’t Much to Say”, comes from a line in one of his letters written home during WW2. Some works contain collage, while others evoke the calligraphy of his drawings and writings. Most pieces begin with a shape he might have drawn, or the shape of natural objects and spaces. By working in layers I am merging our hands. Using organic forms, contrasts and tension I create a space that is meandering and ambiguous. A space that the viewer can get lost in, perhaps finding a moment in the piece that gives them pause or a feeling of familiarity or wonder. Family is close and a large part of my practice. I live in Beverly, MA. with my husband Joe and our two springer spaniels, Bella and Jenny. Our daughter, her husband, young son and Springer Maggie also live in Beverly. Another influence to my practice includes teaching. I have been teaching art at Beverly High School since 1994 and I also have the good fortune to have my daughter as a colleague at BHS.

Michelle Brown

Painting

I create my work intuitively and organically, starting with a palette of colors and a chosen method of delivering the paint to the canvas. I usually have an idea in mind when I start, and the work naturally evolves into something unexpected. I use acrylic paints, mixed with various mediums, and utilize pouring, palette knives, pipettes and even balloons to apply the paint to canvas. I enjoy experimenting with new tools to create different effects. My paintings depict the sensations of a moment in time, and often resemble emotive terrains. I try to capture movement and life in a vocabulary of feelings without words. It is fascinating to see the layers of paint overlap and the colors collide at my direction. I work very much in the moment, and aim to evoke a sense of strong emotion in the viewer. My intent is that the audience will relate to the paintings in unique ways that are relevant to them.

With over 20 years experience as a portrait artist, Bobbie Bush has crafted a unique approach to portraits, combining traditional photographic portraiture with hand-applied painting artistry. This mixed media approach blends a variety of mediums and tools, from the camera to the tablet to artist brushes. Each portrait art piece is finished on canvas with oils and acrylics. Donna Caselden

Artist Donna Caselden is a well-known talent across the spectrum of visual design. An award winning experimental artist and clothing designer, Caselden also works one-on-one with clients on interior design and home décor projects. Caselden works from her studio in the seaside village of Annisquam, Massachusetts. Her works are showcased in museums and galleries throughout New England, New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, including the highly regarded Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts. One of Donna Caselden’s designs received the Certificate of Excellence by ManneqArt, for wearable art and design. The award-winning dress was displayed in Washington, DC and was recently featured in the PEM as part of the World of Wearable Art (WOW) exhibit. As a painter, Donna Caselden has won acclaim for her work with acrylic, watercolor and oil paint. She is known for her experimental 2D artwork, incorporating unusual substances like marble dust, sand, coffee grounds, or wood shavings to achieve unique texture and effects. Donna Caselden is a member of Cape Ann’s Experimental Art Group at Rockport Art Association, Society for Encouragement of Arts (seARTS), the Rocky Neck Art Colony, and the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA.) She is available for workshops and presentations to share her experience and expertise in the creative design process.

Emily Cooper

Emily Cooper graduated from Bowdoin College in 2010 with a B.A. in Visual Arts. She has been creating artworks since the year the movie Hook was released in theaters. Maybe earlier. She currently resides in Peabody with her husband and her dog- the latter being easily mistaken for a wild, skeptical dingo of the savannah. The former- a muffin, the studly kind. The purpose of her work is twofold- to offer windows of reflection, and to encourage joy. She paints whatever whim passes through her heart be it clouds, flora, or fauna, and she won’t be settling on any one subject soon. She does gravitate, however, toward painting humorous portraits of bears- a series inspired by a set of post-it doodles she made for her husband years ago. Always interested by the intersection between naivete and the magic of youth with the darker themes of adulthood and human experience, she experiments with notions of playfulness and monstrosity. You may see more works from her with these themes in the future. In the end what makes her feel most successful overall is when she’s been able to bring a smile to your face.

Kirsten Fischler

Kirsten Fischler has developed a unique style of art making that incorporates recycled building materials in such a way the leftover mundane is transformed into rustic refinement. She has been working with reclaimed wood and oil paint for over twenty five years. Her work explores the tension between organic shapes and geometric forms made from manufactured wood products. She d Artists 1 econstructs and then reconstructs her imagery to mimic the pseudo-recycling of a culture that discards nature at its own expense. Her painting process is visceral, spiritual and intuitive as she attempts to honor the trees that once supplied oxygen, food, tools, and shelter. Her work is in corporate collections in the Mid-Atlantic region and in private collections domestically and abroad. She has taught at Moore College of Art and Design as well as Delaware College of Art and Design. Fischler’s work appears in the book 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley by Catherine Quillman. Raymond Gilbert

Biography Raymond J. Gilbert (born 1966) American artist born in Lynn, Massachusetts. Graduate of Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University (BFA 1993). Gilbert is an Artist member of the Boston Copley Society of Art. Working in multiple mixed medium paintings and woodcuts. His work draws much from current life events creating contemporary historical paintings. Gilbert’s creative process generally starts by throwing sweeping lines and pulling out abstract forms which begin to materialize into a basic composition (that may or may not have a preconceived agenda). Pulling in image and working out details with active sketchbooks and cell phone images. A work is deemed finished when a coherent balance between color, space and form has been accomplished. (Theme being that which develops / evolves as it’s built.) Gilbert has won awards in painting and printmaking, his works can be found in private collection in North America, Canada, Europe and South Africa.

Samantha Gottlich

Samantha Gottlich is an artist and creative under the name NROR ART (No Rhyme or Reason Art). A year after Samantha was diagnosed with Lupus, she began painting and creating art and accessories inspired by her disease. Samantha abstract paints and creates nature infused paintings. She sells prints in small quantities. She also paints buttons and pins. She hand strings bracelets and occasionally sews, too. She has an eco friendly denim collection called GOTT THE BLUES. Through her art, Samantha shows her support for Lupus awareness, LGBTQ support, Black Lives Matter, Female Empowerment, AIDS awareness, pop culture, and living care free. Samantha is available for showcasing her paintings and vending her “wearabale art”.

Kristen Nyberg

Kristen Nyberg’s oil paintings explore how elements from the past enhance the spaces we inhabit in the present and the different meanings they hold for the community. Her moody images, many of them incorporating vintage signs, are created not simply to memorialize the past, but to speak to the current Instagram age and suggest that the visual input of our surroundings goes beyond ephemeral. Nyberg, a native of Marblehead Massachusetts, earned a BFA in Illustration and Design from Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) She worked as a freelance illustrator and eventually moved into sign design. She owns Nyberg Design, which provides a host of illustration and design services to the industry and individual clients. As the digital image became ubiquitous with a smart phone in everyone’s pocket and social media platforms allowing infinite photos shared at a blinding pace (and thus easily overlooked or discarded), Nyberg felt photography was not sufficient to evoke the mood and implied story that she wants to share. Painting serves her as a meditation on the subject matter, providing a way to entice viewers to pause and consider both the immediate visual impact a vintage element has on its neighborhood as well as the unintended emotional responses attached to it by locals over time.

Artist Bio /Statement I originally grew up in the “old” Newburyport before marrying and raising three children. Throughout this period , feeling the need for artistic endeavors and influenced strongly by the many Artists and Business people in my family, I started a Pottery business. I was self taught except for annual trips to the Reward Manufacturing Company in Glen Burnie, MD. Brief study in store display at North Shore Community College and Color and Design at Northeastern University influenced my creative design, production and sales. This business evolved into a multi state wholesale production and employed 5 Sales Representative plus 7 crafts people. Displaying in the Gift Centers of New England, the Prudential Center; New York, The Jacob Javits Convention Center; Florida and Chicago many major accounts were acquired including Jordan Marsh Company, Macy’s, Richards Department Stores, Johnny Appleseeds. In 1978 my life changed and so did I, enrolling in Academia and pursing other aspirations. I entered the world of Education and IT. Now retired from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, MIS Department , I am focusing fully on developing my own funky creations. My work is primarily in clay but I also enjoy painting, sketching and sculpture as well. There is a wonderful feeling to having clay in my hands and painting, but I am always open to try new things and grow as an artist and an individual. There is never a feeling that one must be held to just traditional forms of expression but instead to also experiment with new ideas and color combinations. I create unique, one-of-a kind objects which display my mood and feeling of the day. Susan Quateman

Susan Quateman is an environmental planner, who has practiced in both the UK and the USA, and an artist focused on silk painting. She weaves planning and landscape design into paintings and banners on climate change and natural resource conservation. Susan often works collaboratively with photographer Leslie Bartlett. Their artistic work, which includes unique montages of silk paintings and photographs, has been shown at the National Park Service Visitor Center in Salem, MA; at galleries in Marblehead and Gloucester; at the Essex Country Greenbelt Association’s Cox Reservation in Essex, MA, and at the Crane Estate Art Show in Ipswich, MA. Susan is co-Administrator of Ten Pound Studio, a silk painting teaching studio, in Gloucester, MA. Susan is from London, UK.

Creating an escape! Are we all not looking for peace, art brings me peace. Art provides a realm to escape, a place to unwind and see the world as only dreamed. I draw upon my experiences and emotion to set the tone for what I create; it could be a walk on the beach, the shadows of the moon, a faraway land waiting to be explored or a cherished memory. Culture and faith play a role in all that I do, my art is no exception. We live in a wide world where beauty abounds, I am bequeathing an image where traditions and thought bind us together. My art aims to channel understanding and shine light on the inner light which connects us all.

Susan Schrader

I am a Visual Artist and Book Illustrator living in Marblehead, MA I received a BFA(’93) at Queen’s University, in Canada and a MFA(’96) at Illinois State University, USA where I studied drawing, printmaking, painting and art history. Currently I am working on a new series of drawings and paintings on canvas and paper. My work contains whimsical pen and ink drawings that focus on these fanciful creatures in a city-like landscape that are rich in color, full of creative patterns and bizarre movements. Raising our two boys and dog as well as soaking up the culture and art during several extensive family trips has added fuel to my creative fire. These trips to India, South Africa, Australia, Hawaii, Florence and Namibia for example, have given me much inspiration! Each country had different colors, sounds, smells and energy. These tactile memories are now bubbling up within me and finding their way onto the surface of the canvas. Each of my figures have their own story to tell. The viewer is part of this storytelling because we bring our own stories and our own history to the painting. What is your story? How would you draw it? Now that our boys are older, I have found a renewed energy and focus within myself. This rejuvenated creative drive is reflected throughout my drawings and paintings. Sykes Sykes

Painting

Annette Sykes is a painter who works in oil paint, watercolors and pastels, painting seascapes, cityscapes, figurative art and still life. She works mostly from life – as an observational artist, Annette draws and paints what she sees. She shows her work at the Galleries At LynnArts (GALA) and other art galleries around the North Shore of Boston, including Marblehead Arts and SalemArts. Annette has a studio at LynnArts and is the Gallery Director and Founder of GALA. She has also been appointed to the Lynn Public Arts Commission. In addition to her volunteer efforts to support the arts community, she directs and supports weekly figurative arts groups around the North Shore, bringing together groups of artists who draw and paint from the model, forming a community of artists. After spending her formative years in the Midwest, she studied fashion design in New York in the mid-90’s and then transitioned to the fine arts when she moved to Boston. Annette worked at First Expressions, an art gallery just off Newbury Street, while attending post-baccalaureate courses at Mass College of Art. In 2001, while living for a short time in San Francisco, Annette graduated from the California College of the Arts with an MFA. She then returned to the East Coast and settled in Lynn. Having now, spent almost half of her life here, she feels warmly connected to the community. She lives across from Red Rock Park with her husband and paints often along the beaches and in the park.
