My studies and career have taken a winding path from art to science to a merging of art and science, and that has had a significant influence on my creativity. For the most part, I am a self-taught artist, so I am always seeking to try new ways to express myself.
The work exhibited here represents eight years of mixed media exploration. My earlier pieces are predominantly acrylic painting with elements of other media added in. Whereas my newer pieces feature more manipulated unconventional materials that complement the painting or even cover it completely as they are built up. When sourcing these other materials I try to use things that would otherwise be thrown away, so in a sense, many of my works are also recycled art.
In traditional painting and drawing I often struggle with self-editing and a “heavy hand”. These mixed media paintings are a great release for me because I can build layers on layers and cover every inch of the canvas until I feel like the piece is complete. There is little planning that goes into these, or at least, the finished product is almost never what was originally intended. A few of these were even painted on existing older paintings, keeping some of that original painting as part of the background.
