The Essex County Artist Fund is Essex County Community Foundation’s response to the immediate and everyday needs of artists to be supported and lifted up across the county and across sectors. At ECCF, our philosophy is to build a creative ecosystem focused on awareness and appreciation for arts and culture, capacity building, collaboration, and cultural planning. Individual artists and arts/culture organizations are key to this network. www.eccf.org/creative-county.
Artist Name: Binh Nguyen – Lawrence
Learn more: @firstname.lastname@example.org
Creative Practice: I am a writer. I have been writing since as long as I can remember but recently committed myself to start taking my work more seriously, and aligning it with my art. I started working at a bookstore cafe in Lawrence to focus my efforts on building a literary community. This started after I got back from South Africa at the end of October.
Artist Statement: Y-Bình Nguyễn (pronouns: she/they) is a proud daughter to American War in Vietnam refugees. She is an immigrant from a rural farming village—Hội An, An Giang, Việt Nam—and her diaspora placed her in The City of Immigrants: Lawrence, Massachusetts. Her poetry & prose focuses on the poignant themes of transgenerational trauma & healing, critical compassion, queer coming of age love stories, and science-fiction future imaginations in the tradition of Octavia Butler. She is a passionate educator with a praxis of communal learning; one of her favorite places in the world to teach and learn in is Mamelodi, South Africa.
