Because the arts bring communities to life.
With $160K of support from ECCF’s Creative County Initiative, the Essex County Creative Nonprofit Resiliency Grant Program succeeded in helping forty-seven creative nonprofits weather the early economic devastation of COVID-19, and the CCI creative network continues to grow and strengthen as a result. The Essex County Artist Fund remains open for individual artists economically affected by COVID-19.
The financial burden to GALA during the shutdown has been several-fold. Our day-to-day operations have halted with the closing of the galleries and shop to the public. Donations made to the gallery from visitors as well as income from the sale of art and local crafts have impacted us as well as our artists who rely on sales as part of their income. We have also had to postpone or possibly cancel our yearly fundraiser. This is our primary source of funds and as it was scheduled for April, we had already incurred expenses for the party when the pandemic hit. Several event rentals have been canceled along with openings, classes, and community outreach events. Grants that we were in the running for have halted the application processes and delayed the distribution dates to focus on immediate needs. We have continued to pay rent on the gallery space despite the lack of income and have purchased some digital tools to help us maintain connection with our artists and community.

Mission: The Galleries at LynnArts (GALA) is an arts-based collaborative that is a Collaborative Nonprofit Art Gallery. It is led by a group of local artists and art organizers who have designed two galleries and a gallery shop. These spaces are used to exhibit group and solo shows as well as house a gallery shop filled with arts and crafts produced by North Shore artists and makers. We work with artists and makers at every stage of their career. Emerging artists are given support in developing their work, preparing work for professional presentation and exhibition, and access to the local gallery system. GALA is a community where the gallery spaces and outside events are used to promote and sell artwork from those artists who traditionally have had access to galleries and to invite makers who might not have had access into the space and honor their products and objects equally. We create community through exhibit receptions, artists’ sales and fairs, and by using the gallery spaces for public and private events. It is our intention to support the whole artist by creating programming to promote skills growth, well-being, and foster a healthy art community.
