Because the arts bring communities to life.
With $160K of support from ECCF’s Creative County Initiative, the Essex County Creative Nonprofit Resiliency Grant Program succeeded in helping forty-seven creative nonprofits weather the early economic devastation of COVID-19, and the CCI creative network continues to grow and strengthen as a result. The Essex County Artist Fund remains open for individual artists economically affected by COVID-19.
NAA exhibition space is completely closed. We have suspended education and outreach programs. Staff has been laid off and the board has assumed management as a capital preservation measure. Actual and expected losses since March 1 totals $137,856 based on last year’s (calendar 2019) actual financial results March 1 to December 31. Of this, $26,766 is projected to be forgone from classes and $20,540 from NAA’s portion of art sales and $14,550 from show entry fees. Our largest fundraiser typically held in June, on average over the past three years typically nets $76,000. It has been provisionally moved to September. However, we remain cautious and uncertain as to whether it will be safe to, or we will be allowed to, hold it before 2021.

Mission: The mission of the Newburyport Art Association (NAA) is to make art accessible to all in our community. Exhibition space, both physical and online, offers local and regional artists an outlet to show and sell their work; and offers community members and visitors to Newburyport the opportunity to experience original art. Adults and children participate in our arts education programs. Our arts education programs have become increasingly important as public school arts funding has been cut. as well as our scholarships which were $12,000 in 2019. We reach socially vulnerable populations including school children grade 12 and under with ArtLink, that provides scholarships for education and outreach programs for those with financial need; veterans with our photography program; and the mentally and physically disabled with OpArt that provides arts education, part-time employment at the gallery and an annual client exhibition.
