Because the arts bring communities to life.
With $160K of support from ECCF’s Creative County Initiative, the Essex County Creative Nonprofit Resiliency Grant Program succeeded in helping forty-seven creative nonprofits weather the early economic devastation of COVID-19, and the CCI creative network continues to grow and strengthen as a result. The Essex County Artist Fund remains open for individual artists economically affected by COVID-19.

Mission: The mission of Theater in the Open is to redefine the boundaries of community theater by transforming the magical tradition of storytelling into theater that is open and free to all. We perform outdoors in public spaces, connecting art with nature and our community with each other. We are also dedicated to elevating the quality and accessibility of youth arts education to further enrich the cultural landscape. The foundation of our work is built upon accessibility — our outdoor performances are free to all, and we have a Summer Arts Workshop Scholarship Program to ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation. In these ways we support economically vulnerable populations. Supporting socially vulnerable populations is also foundational to our mission. For 40 years we have watched engagement with the arts build confidence, communication skills and resiliency among our students. We have forged partnerships with such non-profits as the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center and the Esperanza Academy to expand our ability to reach underserved populations. It has been a privilege to witness the ways in which sharing art, offering a safe space for individual expression, and helping students and audiences re-connect with nature can be a protective factor for children and families.
