Because the arts bring communities to life.
With $160K of support from ECCF’s Creative County Initiative, the Essex County Creative Nonprofit Resiliency Grant Program succeeded in helping forty-seven creative nonprofits weather the early economic devastation of COVID-19, and the CCI creative network continues to grow and strengthen as a result. The Essex County Artist Fund remains open for individual artists economically affected by COVID-19.

Mission: Raw Art Works (RAW) is a creative youth development organization rooted in art therapy. Since 1988, RAW’s mission has been to ignite the desire to create and the confidence to succeed in underserved youth. RAW’s target population is youth ages 7-19 living in Lynn and surrounding communities. We specifically intend to serve youth who live in low-income households (80%) and/or who have mental health challenges (43%) or other learning disabilities (22%), because these characteristics can pose barriers to post-secondary success. In a recent RAW survey, 84% of teens reported experiencing at least one category of childhood trauma. This past year, RAW served 449 youth through 46 free programs. 79% came from low or extremely low-income families. 44% identified as Hispanic/Latino, 31% White, 17% multi-racial/other, 7% Black and 6% Asian. 51% had parents/guardians born in a foreign country, and 10% of youth were born in a foreign country. 55% do not speak English as the primary language in their home. 22% expressed that they have learning challenges. 43% had a mental health diagnosis or challenge. Many more students showed signs of unacknowledged or undiagnosed challenges. 84% of our teens have experienced at least one category of childhood trauma. These youth and families are particularly vulnerable to the health (including mental health) and financial impacts of the pandemic crisis. While RAW has temporarily suspended onsite programs and moved to remote work, we are unwavering in our commitment to youth.
