Because the arts bring communities to life.
With $160K of support from ECCF’s Creative County Initiative, the Essex County Creative Nonprofit Resiliency Grant Program succeeded in helping forty-seven creative nonprofits weather the early economic devastation of COVID-19, and the CCI creative network continues to grow and strengthen as a result. The Essex County Artist Fund remains open for individual artists economically affected by COVID-19.

Mission: In 1668, merchant and ship-owner John Turner built a house on Salem Harbor that was destined to become one of America’s most beloved historic homes. The House of the Seven Gables is best known today as the setting of world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel. In 1910, Salem philanthropist Caroline Emmerton restored the house and opened it to the public as a museum, using proceeds from ticket sales specifically to fund settlement work that benefited immigrant families. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association (The Gables) continues today to fulfill the original and broad goals of Emmerton, with a modern approach.
Today, The Gables’ mission is to be a welcoming, thriving, historic site and community resource that engages people of all backgrounds in our inclusive American story. In addition to tours, public lectures and exhibits, The Gables’ offers a variety of Settlement programs specifically for local immigrant families. These include Community Conversations, facilitated discussions on topics on immigration to social reform, Caribbean Connections, a summer enrichment program for English Language Learners in elementary and middle school, and Adult English as a Secondary Language and Citizenship Classes with beginner and Intermediate English classes that build literacy skills and Citizenship classes that support students in their naturalization applications. In 2019, over 500 people participated in these programs.
