A Boston native, Beatty was a longtime senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly, a book reviewer at Newsweek, and literary editor of The New Republic. He has received a Guggenheim fellowship, two fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and an American Book Award among a host of awards.
