Express Yourself
Express Yourself immerses at-risk young people in the arts, where they find powerful tools for self-expression, uncover inner strength, and deepen connection with others.
Our programs bring much-needed joy and teach skills that have the power to change lives. Using art as a springboard, Express Yourself helps at-risk youth move from alienation to belonging. Through visual arts, music, dance and theater they learn to express themselves in healthy, positive ways. And in the process, they discover inner strength and develop a sense of connection with others.
Our collaborative approach teaches young people how to learn from one another, make connections with peers, and work together toward a common goal. Central to our model is unconditional care, with the support we provide building trust and confidence, and laying a foundation for meaningful community contribution.
We find that when young people are valued and have a healthy sense of belonging, they are better able to participate in and contribute to society.
The year culminates with a grand performance at the Boch Center– Wang Theatre in May. Every aspect of the performance — the set, the music, the dancing, the videos, the spoken words — is the result of hundreds of individual contributions from youth working in the studio, in the community, and in treatment facilities throughout the program year.
Being celebrated for their successes is often something new for these young performers; and for the adults in their lives, the show offers a way to see their child as an important part of an exceptional event. The show is free and open to the public, and everyone is invited to join us to experience the joy that comes through when young people discover their voice.
