Castle Hill on the Crane Estate
Castle Hill on the Crane Estate is a National Historic Landmark owned and cared for by The Trustees. It is the former summer estate of Chicago industrialist Richard T. Crane, Jr. and his family. Each summer (1910-1949) the Crane family entertained guests on this magnificent property that featured gardens; a saltwater swimming pool; a maze; and the Grand Allee, a 1/2 mile rolling lawn lined with hedgerows and statuary. The Stuart-style mansion that graces the top of the hill is now used for weddings, tours, and public events. The grounds are open daily, 8 am – sunset. In season, the Crane Estate offers tours of the house and landscape; cultural events throughout the year, including summer Picnic Concerts, Crane Estate Art Show & Sale, Christmas at Castle Hill, and Fire & Ice at Castle Hill; and Crane Outdoor Adventure Programs, including full moon hikes, kayak paddles, trips to Choate Island, and adventures for families.
